The 27th PwC Kosmos 3-in-1 was held on 9 March 2019 at Lake Umuzi in Secunda. On Friday the runners from all over South Africa streamed into Secunda and filled every hotel, guest house, and lodge to the brim. On Friday night, the heavens opened and, the rain came pouring down, cooling of the earth and helping the dust to settle.
Saturday morning from 4h30 the vibe could be felt and in no time Lake Umuzi was a beehive of activity. The excitement was tangible as the runners warmed up and the light drizzle of the last bit of rain fell. At 6h00, 2558 runners started the 42.2km. The first male Koketjo Gumbo, finished with a time of 2:37:24 and the first female, Reneta Vosloo came in at 2:53:42. The number of 2209 athletes finished the event.

Only from 13:00 the sun came out and we enjoyed a hot summers day in the Highveld. Runners equipped with running caps and sunscreen set off for the 21.1km. Luckily, all the water points were prepared for the heat and stood ready with ice cold water and coca-cola to keep the runner hydrated.

Laerskool Secunda’s water point was not only entertaining for the runners but also for the public. During the course of the day, Laerskool Secunda’s drum majorettes performed as well as Hoërskool Oosterland’s orchestra. Rita Henriëtta Joubert commented on The Bulletin’s Facebook post that she enjoys watching this waterpoint from her front lawn.
